P6- Show reel for unit 24

https://youtu.be/pvFFJSXFHYo

A collection of my favourite projects I've created through my two years at Long Road.
The idea behind our music video is based around a bad relationship and an argument which breaks out but by the end of the video, the two lovers come together after a split screen.
The idea was majority generated by myself as I naturally took on the director and producer role and pulled together everybody's concepts into an organised and realistic structure which could be shot in the local area and within the week deadline.
We were all familiar with the equipment used as we used most of it in the previous film project, we used a Canon 100 D with a wide lens to capture a range of shots, as well as a handheld tripod and a tall free-standing tripod.
Additionally, as I was the only girl within the group, I took on the role of the actor in the film along with Jonathan who is the male figure in the film also, being a main character in the film meant that i could act out and bring to life the ideas I had to produce the film.
Doing this project was partially enjoyable as i had a chance to act, direct and learn how to perfectly time lip syncing to a music video.

The second film project within the showreel, is the film which was produced in my first year at college which was the first time I wrote a script and used software such as premier pro. This was such an exciting task as we used my script for the project which meant i took on the role of being a producer, director and then joint editing with Megan. Although the project took a while to film and get to a quality we were happy with, I am very pleased at how well we conducted the process and how well the script was brought to life. I was lucky enough to be joint editing with Megan who is fabulous with premier pro and taught me a bunch of new skills and I have been able to transfer in future tasks, especially the part of the film where Megan becomes distorted through the eyes of Harvey as he has been sedated.  Initially, writing the script was intimidating at first, but once I overcame understanding the general style of screenwriting, I throughly enjoyed it! The equipment used to shoot this film was similar to the previous listed, we used a Canon 600 D with a close lens for some shots, as well as a free-standing tripod and some lightings for the inside shots. The 7 minute film is definitely one of my proudest projects.

Lastly, I co-hosted a breakfast radio show with Jonathan which gave me the experience to get confident with reading from a script and improv where needed whilst keeping with a running schedule. I largely scripted the show and managed the running schedule with the agreement from Jonathan. The breakfast show ran for only 5 minutes and contained an interview, two call ins, 3 songs and two news bulletins both general news and sports related. We used a zoom H1 recording device to do the presenting with and nothing else. I edited the radio show on audition which was a new program for me to use but I quickly picked up the ins and outs of the program. Asides from the practical radio show, we did a sum amount of written work about the radio industry which widened my knowledge about the popular traits of radio and the how a show is conducted.

These 3 projects are the main tasks which boosted my confidence in producing a good quality medium and working closely with members in our groups and compromising ideas to make the task realistic and find a happy medium among the whole group. The films are a useful visual towards how I've learnt to edit on a range of software and put things together to make a good end product. The radio task has assisted me in my future study of the radio sector, as it has given me a head start in learning the base of the radio industry and has allowed me the chance to practice my presenting and editing skills.

Mrs Mandy-Lisa Split,

I am writing to you directly today, to express my passion and love for the radio industry! My qualifications and experience closely meet the requirements mentioned in your job advertisement.

I have had previous experience working in radio sales and customer service. I have worked in a similar environment as yours, as I worked in a smaller independent radio station as a volunteer for some time, as well as having a placement at a local hospital radio station.
Whilst working there, I held the responsibilities of creating a running schedule, editing some snippets, running social media accounts and creating a playlist, as well as brining some exciting guest stars to the shows. The trust and responsibilities I had were very rewarding and I was very loyal to the stations. Additionally, in my previous placements, I successfully increased views and audience ratings up to 15%.

I have extensive knowledge about the media industry and I pride myself on being a very open, friendly and welcoming peoples person.  I have good communication skills, very organised and can take charge of a team.

I have enclosed my CV along with this cover letter, I hope you can see that the stated above is just a glimpse of my skills and experience.

Many thanks,

Charlotte Hurrell

P3 - Evaluate Your Resources.

Evaluate your resources- for Radio Production/presenter

SWOT analysis.

Strengths- strong resources:

  • Good people skills
  • Up to date with social media conventions
  • Access to up to date equipment
  • Adequate funding to support projects
  • Portfolio of past work

Weakness- resources you need access to:

  • Gain contacts and experience in the industry
  • Have to use public transport which can be unreliable
  • Do not have a web presence or public presence at the moment
Opportunities- resources that can lead to opportunities:

  • Attend a specific media university with a strong passion for radio to make close contact and friends with a similar interest
  • Volunteer at a local radio station to get experience and contacts
Threats-

  • A competitive amount of individuals interest in the media industry
  • Lack of experience available and lack of resources

Resource plan

For the type of sector that radio production/presenting is, personality is a key factor that will contribute to the success of your career. Having good people skills and being in touch with up to date social media and technology give you a kicking start to improving on your skills. Having previous work will also help employers see how you produce work and what kind of style you express.
However, having a web presence would benefit as universities or employers could see how the public react and like you, which if you are going for a presenters role, being likeable and interesting would be essential.

Evaluation paragraph

My ultimate job would be a radio producer for a big company such as BBC, after a handful of years working as a radio producer, I would love to work my way up to being Radio manager for the BBC. The resources which will help me succeed at this job role will be my University degree in media and communication (Radio) which will give me knowledge in the industry as well as having knowledge about the media law. I would need a laptop and access to the internet in order to have a internet personality and gain some recognition and work my way up to being noticed by a large mass.

P4 - Career Flow Diagram

The industry I'm interested in is: Radio

One of my weaknesses is related to public speaking and pitching ideas in front of an audience, this is a very important part of my future job role so I need to work on my confidence of talking in front of people and gain more self confidence to take on the role of a leader. Another weakness of mine is that I don't drive and have to rely on public transport which would hinder my chance of getting a job if it's not near by. As well as not having perfect presenting skills, there are a few words that I can't pronounce correctly so to work on that issue I will get some elocution lessons in order to become even better at public speaking and gain more confidence.

Contingency plan

If I don't get accepted into any of my universities, then I will approach a radio station for an apprenticeship or approach any media related company for a job role such as an editor for a magazine or a social media controller for fashion companies. Another contingency plan is that if after university, I can't find a job or other related reasons- I will do a teaching course and become a media teacher for sixth forms or a radio lecturer in university.
